*** "This band has created something exciting in a genre that is looking for new sounds and mash-ups to spark new interest in heavy metal....Whoever knew that death metal can sound so haunting yet so beautiful. I look forward to seeing them when they decide to come to Southern California. Until then, this album will get me ready for them. To Illumina, I salute you. *** "Illumina A.D. Weave a "Tapestry of Lies" With New EP and New Single "Bleed"
Illumina A.D. is a six-piece metal powerhouse hailing from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Their name, which translates to "Light After Death," hints at the group's desire to fuse the brutal with the beautiful. This musical dichotomy is in full effect on their EP Tapestry of Lies and its first single/music video "Bleed."
Founded by rhythm guitarist Alexander Bane in 2011, Illumina A.D. went through what Bane describes as a revolving door line-up before finding themselves as the idiosyncratic sextet that exists today. The twin guitar attack of Bane and lead guitarist Kelsey White is rooted in traditional metal, while bassist Robson Guy and drummer Justin Cavis draw inspiration from funkier, more progressive leaning heavy acts. But it is within the vocal styling of coed duo Otto Von Rado and Jeska A.D. that the group has planted their freak flag. When pressed for influences, Otto offers a list that runs the gamut from classic rock crooners Morrison and Plant to death metal godfathers Chris Barnes and Dave Vincent, while also taking out time to name check alt metal poets Dax Riggs and Neil Fallon. Jeska meanwhile looks to 60s icons Janis Joplin and Grace Slick and jazz and blues royalty Etta James and Nina Simone for inspiration.
Tapestry of Lies is this line-ups first EP and a perfect distillation of the disparate elements at play within this dynamic. Recorded at SoundVision Recording Studios, the EP was produced and engineered by Michael Beck (Abigail Williams) and mastered by Brad Vance (Trivium, All That Remains) at Red Mastering. This team offered the group the best tools possible to document their vision. "Bleed," the first single from the EP is a fully-realized introduction to the band and their sound. The accompanying music video is a no-frills affair that puts the band's skills front and center. Both the EP and its single set expectations high for the future of Illumina A.D.
Illumina A.D. have shared the stage with Otep, Gemini Sydrome, Mushroomhead, One-Eyed Doll, Picture Me Broken, Unsaid Fate, and Stitched Up Heart
